Easy Eco-Friendly Swap Sunday: Washing Up Liquid & Dishwasher Tablets

Welcome to our first Magic Pixies Easy Eco-Friendly Swap Sunday!

We will be regularly sharing with you green, eco-friendly alternatives to every day products, that are easy swaps for you to make in your home! This week we are focusing on products used for cleaning the dishes.. Washing up liquid and dishwashers tablets!

Swap your standard washing up liquid for these eco-friendly alternatives…

Seventh Generation Washing Up Liquid

Seventh Generation is a brilliant brand for people with sensitive skin, or who have general sensitivities to scented products. Their products are either scentless or just have a mild natural fragrance, whilst being effective yet very gentle on our health and the environment. They are eco-friendly: made from 91% plant-based ingredients, with their bottle & cap made with 100% recycled plastic and 100% recyclable! They are cruelty free, but are based in the USA so they contribute to CO2 emissions when being transported over to the UK.

Bio D Washing Up Liquid

Bio D have a selection of eco-friendly washing up liquids, whether you’d prefer fragranced or un-fragranced – we can find the fragranced ones to be over-powering at times! This product is sold in smaller bottles (recyclable plastic), but if you’re looking to be more eco-friendly buy the larger 5l jerry cans and recycle these once finished with them. As we mentioned in our recent World Wildlife Day – Sharing Our Favourite Cruelty-Free Brands blog post, it would be great if Bio D would accept these back, as it would contribute to the circular economy from which we as a protecting Earth society would benefit the most. They are also cruelty-free, and made locally here in the UK which is great as it means less emissions from transport.

Swap your standard dishwasher tablets for these eco-friendly alternatives…

Smol Dishwasher Tablets

Smol Dishwasher Tablets are a great low waste solution – they are so concentrated that they are small enough to be delivered through your letterbox, in packaging that is created using sustainable materials and is 100% recyclable too. Smaller packages means less CO2 emissions in transportation! They are an all-in-one solution meaning you do not need to use rinse-aid or dishwasher salt, again lowering the amount of packaging used! They claim to be eco-friendly, with lower levels of added chemicals per wash when compared to the other tablets brands. We haven’t here at Magic Pixies tried these ourselves, but have heard good stories! They are also cruelty-free, and are manufactured in the EU (exact whereabouts are not stated).

Claro Dishwasher Tablets

These are a Magic Pixies favourite – a great low waste, eco-friendly solution with recyclable packaging and completely organic ingredients! However, the downside is they are from Austria, meaning not only are they harder to get in the UK, but this contributes to higher CO2 emissions as they travel further. They can be bought on Amazon, but this is not our favourite place to shop for ethical products, as Amazon itself as a business is not ethical due to their tax avoidance. You can buy from the Bio Lindo website, with free UK shipping on larger orders if you want to stock up! They are also cruelty-free.

All product information is taken from the company websites. We hope you have found this information useful and will think twice before you next buy your standard products, and instead consider buying one of these eco-friendly alternatives! Here at Magic Pixies we believe in a zero-waste, circular economy but unfortunately it is not straight forward and easy to put this into action when buying products, but even the smallest changes can help.

We have highlighted any issues we do see with the above products, but they are still a much better solution to their non eco-friendly, widely used alternative products that many people are so used to buying without second thought. We understand the price tag on eco-friendly products can put people off, but the above are all good quality products, so a little goes a long way!
